Reading vertically is its own medium

A webtoon is not a print comic moved onto a screen; it is built for a continuous vertical scroll. The empty space between panels creates the passage of time, and the speed of your scroll becomes part of the staging. Coming from print, the gaps look excessive at first — but those gaps carry the tension and pacing. Comics scanned from print and those drawn vertically from the start feel quite different to read, so comparing the two is a good way to understand the format.

What you can read for free

Most platforms open the first few episodes and either charge for the newest ones or release them free after a waiting period. Completed series are sometimes opened in full. Checking which model applies before paying avoids unnecessary spending.

  • Early episodes free
  • Next episode free after a wait
  • Completed series opened in full
  • Varies by title, so check first

Choosing what to read first

Rankings show what is popular now, but many of those have hundreds of episodes already, which is daunting to join. Starting with a completed series with a modest episode count gets you the experience of finishing something quickly. Narrowing by genre tag also fails less often. Asking friends or family for recommendations is another good start; a suggestion from someone who knows your taste is more likely to fit than a chart.

The weekly rhythm

Most series update once a week, so you read an episode and wait seven days. If that pace frustrates you, start with completed series or ones with a large backlog already published. If, on the other hand, the waiting is part of the fun, reading on release day adds the pleasure of going through the comments with everyone else.

Why the official platform matters

Pirate sites cut the revenue that reaches creators and platforms. Given that insufficient revenue is one reason series get cancelled, the more you want a series to continue, the more reading it officially matters. Malware and aggressive ads come with the territory too.

How to spend your first month

Starting several series at once from day one makes it easy to follow none of them properly and lose interest. For the first month, it works better to begin with one completed series and one or two ongoing ones. Use the completed series to binge as much as you like and get used to the webtoon rhythm, and the ongoing ones to experience the weekly wait. Having tried both, it becomes clear which you enjoy more, and from then on you have a basis for choosing.

  • One completed series: binge it to get used to the format
  • One or two ongoing series: experience the weekly rhythm
  • Add titles you like to your favourites
  • After a month, look back at which genres suited you

Reading genre tags and age ratings

Most webtoon platforms show both genre tags and age ratings. Genre tags distinguish, say, a school romance from an office romance or one set in a fantasy world, so narrowing by detailed tags rather than broad genre makes it easier to find something to your taste. Age ratings indicate levels of violence or sexual content, so if you share an account with children in particular, check the rating settings and whether adult verification is on. If the synopsis alone is not enough to judge, reading the first episode free before deciding is never too late.

Settings for easier reading

Knowing a few small features makes reading much more comfortable. Adding a series to your favourites gets you notified of new episodes, and your reading position is saved so it is easy to pick up again. At night, lowering brightness or using a dark display setting eases strain on your eyes. If mobile data costs worry you, check whether there is a feature to download episodes in advance over Wi-Fi. Too many notifications become tiring, so keep them on only for series you genuinely look forward to.

  • Favourites and new-episode notifications
  • Use the saved reading position
  • Lower brightness or use a dark display at night
  • Notifications only for series you really wait for
